Math Word Problems with Answers

MATH WORD PROBLEMS

1. The sum of three numbers is 80.The second number is twice the first number. The third number is 5 more than the second number. What are the three numbers?

2.Jean is playing with building blocks. She decided to stack the blocks so that each row has one less than the row below. There are a total of 55 blocks and just one block on top. How many blocks did she put on the bottom row?

3.You are working in a dairy and have two pots to hold the milk. One holds 5 gallons and one holds 3 gallons. Two customers have ordered 4 gallons. Can you measure out 4 gallons using your 5 and 3 gallons pots?

4.You are in the woods with owls and wolves. There are 22 eyes and 32 legs. How many owls and wolves are there?

5.Two fathers and two sons go fishing together in the same boat. They all catch a fish but the total catch for the day is 3 fish. How is this possible?

ANSWER KEYS
1. Let x = 1st number
     2x = 2nd number
 2x+5 = 3rd number

x+2x+2x+5 = 80
      5x         = 80-5
      5x         =   75
      5                 5
      x           = 15 is the 1st number

2x=2(15)
    = 30 is the 2nd number
2x+5= 2(15)+5
        = 30+5
        =35 is the 3rd number

2. She put 10 blocks on the bottom row

3. Fill the 5 gallon jug with the milk. Fill the 3 gallon jug from the 5 gallon jug. You are now left with 2 gallons of milk in the in the 5 gallon jug. Empty the 3 gallons jug. Now pour the 2 gallons you have in the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. Now refill the 5 gallons jug Pour the 5 gallon jug until the 3 gallon jug is now topped off (will take 1 gallon). You now have 4 gallons of milk left in the 5 gallon jug for your customer.

4. There are 5 owls and 5 wolves (not 6 owls because 2 of the eyes and legs are yours).

5. There are three men: a grandfather, a father (the grandfather’s son and the father’s son).
